Gigóia Island is a real neighbourhood inside Barra da Tijuca, with residents, shops and a routine of its own — not a park that opens and closes. Something is almost always running, but it pays to know how things work before you cross.

Getting here right now
By subway, get off at Jardim Oceânico station and take the Lagoa exit. It is the simplest way and spares you the parking problem.
The entrance is easy to miss: a discreet alley on Av. Armando Lombardi, between the petrol station and the mirrored Unimed building. That is where the boats are. Coming by car, there are private car parks at Av. Armando Lombardi, 350.
The boats never stop
The chalana barges run 24 hours a day. The crossing is short and costs between R$ 2 and R$ 5.
You do not need an address: tell the boatman the name of the restaurant or inn and he will pull up at the right deck. There is also the Barco Táxi (Simão Express), with licensed boats from 6am to midnight.
Bring small change
Most restaurants and inns take cards and PIX. The barge crossing does not — it is cash only.
And there is no cash machine on the island. Sort out small notes before you cross — it is the most common thing first-timers forget.
No cars here
No cars or motorbikes circulate on the island. You get around on foot, along narrow dirt lanes, or by boat between one deck and the next.
Wear comfortable closed shoes. High heels and this island do not get along.
The island looks after itself
Despite its size, Gigóia is self-sufficient: two small markets, pharmacies, a greengrocer, pet shops, hardware stores and dozens of small businesses.
For emergencies, clinics and 24-hour pharmacies are on Av. Armando Lombardi, five minutes away by boat.
Live music at the weekend
Saturday and Sunday are when the island fills up, with music on the decks and busy restaurants.
Briza da Gigóia and Caiçaras usually have a band at weekends. If you want quiet and empty lanes, come Monday to Thursday instead.
Tours that run every day
The Carioca Pantanal tour runs daily through the mangroves, where you see caimans and capybaras up close. Around R$ 50 per person.
The Tijucas Islands are a four-hour trip on open sea, with clear water and sea turtles, around R$ 150 per person. That one depends on the weather and sells out fast — worth arranging ahead.
With a pet, kids or limited mobility
The island is pet friendly: several bars welcome animals, and holiday homes such as Casa Venti accept pets.
If walking is difficult, the way to do it is to take the boat straight to the deck of places set up for it, such as Laguna and Kauai, rather than crossing the island on foot.

Which is the best day to visit?
It depends what you are after. Weekends bring music, crowds and a party feel. Monday to Thursday the island is nearly silent, and that is when you can talk to residents and see the lagoon completely still.
It is raining. Is it still worth it?
For eating, yes: the restaurants are covered and the grey weather over the lagoon is beautiful. Open-sea boat trips such as the Tijucas Islands, though, depend on good weather and tend to be rescheduled.
