It is a cluster of ten islands linked by boat, with no cars and no bridge, home to seafood restaurants, guest houses, bars with live music, and boat tours through the mangrove canals locals call the Carioca Pantanal. How do you get to Gigóia Island?
By boat. The crossing leaves from Jardim Oceânico, in Barra da Tijuca, and takes about three minutes. Boats run all day and the fare is a couple of reais per person. By metro, Jardim Oceânico station is a short walk from the pier.
Do I need cash?
Almost every restaurant and guest house takes cards and Pix, but there is no ATM on the island. Bring some change for the boat crossing, which does not always have a card reader.
Can I drive there?
No. There is no bridge and no streets for cars: you arrive by boat and cross the island on foot. You can park on the mainland, near the pier.
Which day is best to visit?
Saturday and Sunday bring live music and the biggest crowds. Monday to Thursday the island is nearly empty, which is better if you want quiet lanes and no queues.
Do I need to book a table?
On weekdays, almost never. On weekends and holidays, yes: the places facing the lagoon fill up at lunch and again at sunset.
Is it worth a full day?
It is. A common plan is a morning boat tour through the canals, a seafood lunch, and late afternoon at a waterside bar watching the sun go down.
